Locally known groups like the Swinging Medallions, The Drifters, Second Nature and the Zodiacs all made a national impact. The main difference between national and local was that some got signed and some didn't. I was a fan of the locals and still am. We listened to Woody Windham's show on WCOS AM and enjoyed beach music interviews and songs. One of my radio favorites was Archie Jordan and Hank Martin's band, Second Nature. Archie Jordan later became one of Nashville's top songwriters with songs like "What A Difference You've Made In My Life" and the classic "It Was Almost Like A Song" (featured in the movie, Bridges Over Madison County). The 1960 hit 'Stay' by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs was recorded in the old WOLO TV studios off of Shakespeare Road in Dentsville. That song went on to become the shortest #1 single in in Billboard Magazine's history timed at one minute and thirty-seven seconds. Beach Music was born in the Carolina's and Dentsville was right in the heart of it all. The Bands of Dentsville included The Soul Aces featuring the Ritter Brothers and bass guitarist Clyde Hess (also a member of The Mystics). The Boalons (with keyboard player Jimmy Joyner) and The Coachmen (w/ Randy Joye) maintained high quality musicianship. These bands played local dances and other events and were well known for years, not just at Dentsville. As was the custom, 'Goodnight My Love' was the traditional closing song for bands at places like Fort Jackson's Teen Club and late night house party's. Common Repertoire among the groups included tunes like 'Stand By Me', 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling', 'Unchained Melody' and 'Mustang Sally', songs that still rank among the great classics. At Doug Broomes and A & W root beer drive-in's, Dentsville High school students would often drive both in, through and around the entire lots for no other reason than to just be seen. Music boomed from radio's across the front parking lot of A & W where frosty mugs of root beer and steaming burgers were deliver...Expand for more
ed to car window trays. The music was aired live by neighboring Doug Broomes via WCOS radio which featured a broadcasting booth right on the premises. We all knew the words to beach music tunes like Hey Baby, Save The Last Dance For Me and Under The Boardwalk...and we made sure everyone knew that we knew by belting out the words to all the songs followed by a spontanious chinese fire drill at every red light! Carolina Beach music is well established and nationally renowned. But the music and memories of Dentsville stands preserved in the heart and soul of our school's finest years. _______________ MY STORY BIO PREAMBLE: I'm a writer by trade. In that regard, I offer my story year to year, past to present and a touch beyond... 1962 - THE BRICK NEWS! At age 12, published my local neighborhood newspaper entitled THE BRICK, along with my friends Donnie and Bobby Fallaw. We hand delivered our papers throughout the neighborhood located between Nancy Street and Shakesphere road. The paper was four cents per copy, a million to us! From this small start and throughout high school, writing was and remains my career objective. 1970 - 1979 1970 - Established OSM (Original Sound Music) / Joined BMI / wrote & recorded my first 45 RPM recorded at Arthur Smith Studios in Charlotte NC, with my friend, drummer Greg Boykin of Dentsville High School. Worked as guitarist with Dentsville based Highway band featuring Gary Joye, bass guitar and vocals. 1973 - Published PEOPLE (first local music newspaper) written, printed and hand distributed newspaper to music stores throughout Columbia. In 1976 I was offered my first professional writing job as columnist with Richland Northeast newsweekly. 1980 In 1980 My column got the attention of Sandlapper magazine publishers who approached me about composing a profile on musician Johnny Helms and the Spoleto festival in Charleston, South Carolina. (Copies of those articles can be found today in library archives anywhere in South Carolina.) Up to 1988, I worked as graphic artist, but my heart was never in it. Even so, the skills I learned are still in use to this day. 1989 - HURRICANE HUGO ARRIVES In 1989, Hurricane Hugo tore through the state of South Carolina, and I made sudden trip to South Florida, hoping for enough time for things to get back to normal. But my two-week trip turned into twenty years of an incredible adventure. IN FLORIDA: 1990 - 1994 Began work as columnist with the American Press Association where 'Sound Waves' was once again a weekly feature. 1995 - Started as Guitarist at Juno Beach Cafe. Teamed with the legendary producer Peter Solley (keyboard man/record producer for Peter Frampton, The Romantics and other major bands) writing and recording new songs 1998 - 1999 - Original member of cdbaby.com, currently the world's largest online music store and distributorship . 2000 - (March) Wrote and produced my first CD entitled Sound Of My Guitar followed by my second five months later entitled 'Pictures Of Christmas' (unavailable) 2001 - Among the top-selling Indie blues guitar players at cdbaby. 2002 - Joined Harry Fox Agency, New York. Recorded my second album 'Christmas Collectibles' Began recording sessions with vocalist Lindsey Blount and The Java Cafe Band. 2003 - Featured independent artist at the opening of iTunes in April. 2001 - 2005 - Established Original Sound Music recording studios in Abacoa, Florida. (Now located in Palm Beach Gardens) Began a new series of recording sessions with top musician friends, Sam Pacetti and Peter Solley. 2006 - Recorded 'Mississippi Delta Frog Pond Blues' cd and Amazing Grace featuring singer Judy Hall 2007 - Released the Original Beach Music Band all guitar instrumental album. 2008 - Signed a contract with Universal Studios of Europe for love songs album entitled 'Close To You', a compilation CD. Music 4 - Jamming The Blues - released Sept. 2011 CHRISTMAS INSTRUMENTALS - 11/11/11 2012 - Retired ____ CURRENT: Presently retired from travel with a medical issue regarding nerve damage in my right leg. Nevertheless, still performing random shows in South Florida weekly. Active Member of the following music sources: cdbaby.com / Harry Fox Agency of New York, BMI (Broadcast Music Inc) / Indie Music Inc / Soundscan / Billboard.com / Sunbiz (Florida official Business owner's registry) / Sound Exchange / Spotify Music _______________ WRITING Writing has been and continues to be my deepest passion. From my first published local neighborhood newspaper to the more prominent articles published in Sandlapper magazine and the American press association, I love the process of creating a work of literal art in printed form. In school, however only one, my fifth grade teacher, Mrs Davis seemed to take serious notice. She would often read the latest of my ongoing series of short stories and home grown documentations to the entire class. On the final day of school she left a note on my report card that basically summed up her belief that I would one day pursue a career in journalism. And although I now focus mainly on songwriting, which I also love, I've never lost my original fire for writing in a creative and timeless format. My interest in everything from science fiction, to the simplicity of an emotionally charged love song looms enormous in my thoughts from day to day. But what I wouldn't give to have those very first original articles from the class of Mrs. Davis, back in those now far gone years of Dentsville High School. ______________ AMAZING GRACE - THE MOST AMAZING GOSPEL SONG John Newton's Amazing Grace is the not only the best known Gospel song in the world, it also happens to be one the most recorded songs among entertainment's most elite. Arlo, Elvis, Aretha Franklin have their own unique versions. Vocalist Judy Collin's acapella version from the 1970's is considered one of her greatest recordings and among the top 100 most popular songs of the early 1970's. For such a song as Amazing Grace, written back in the 1700's, to continue as one of history's most popular tunes right up to the current times is nothing less than...well, amazing. John Newton wrote the words to this beloved hymn between 1760 and 1770 while working as an evangelical pastor. Son of the commander of a merchant ship, Newton was captain of a slave ship for many years, until he underwent a dramatic religious conversion while steering his vessel through a storm. Repenting and regretting the misery he had inflicted on the thousands of human cargo he had transported across the Middle Passage for many years, he devoted his life to the Church. Newton also wrote the lyrics to many other hymns, but nothing as enduring as Amazing Grace. In 1780 Newton left Olney to become rector of St. Mary Woolnoth church in London. There he drew large congregations and influenced many, among them William Wilberforce, then member of parliament. Newton continued to preach until the last year of life, although he was blind by that time. He died in London December 21, 1807. RARE FACTS ABOUT AMAZING GRACE: *The First Known commercial recording of Amazing Grace was by the Wisdom Sisters in 1926 *Amazing Grace was included in the soldier's hymnals during the Civil War *There are at least 1000 documented arrangements and more than 1000 different recorded versions of Amazing Grace worldwide. *John Newton's original title of Amazing Grace was "Faith's Review And Expectation" *"Amazing Grace has the power to transform a room into something different and better. It really is powerful" - Judy Collins *Amazing Grace was performed by Arlo Gunthrie at Woodstock *Amazing Grace was the most performed song at the memorial sevices following the 9/11 tragedy
